This album can be summed up fairly simply: Heavy, mid paced industrial guitar riffs with super low bass that locks in perfectly with the drum machines, with some desperate, massive vocals roared by Broadrick. There's the occaisonal moments where thing will drop out, to give your ears some respite (The heavily treated guitar intro in Mighty Truck Krusher ) Still, as far as I can tell, Godflesh tried to write the heaviest, darkest industrial record they could, and they succeeded. The drums are huge and fit the sound so well.. Sometimes they're upfront, like the pulverising Pulp, sometimes they're a long way in the background, but for the most part, they are shattering and splintering eardrums. The guitars sound very heavy throughout the whole album, especcially in the superb Christbait Rising, and in the awesome Head Dirt. Whether they're playing super low riffs, or providing a backdrop for the bass and drums, the guitar demand to be noticed.

This a unique and special album. The soundtrack for the Japanamation film Akira was commissioned to Geinoh Yamashirogumi, a vocal ensemble first organized in Japan in 1953. Moreover, the album also incorporates quite a bit of a Balinese gamelan influence, thereby causing the merger of styles to become even more pronounced. For those interested in mergers of style, this album is essential.

The songs on the album cover the development of the Akira narrative, wherein the tragic hero, Tetsuo, is transformed into a diabolical monster by the use of mind-altering drugs and various previously latent powers, eventually to to destroyed out of necessity by his former allies. One need not be familiar with this narrative, however, to appreciate the music on the work.

On the eighth full-length album under the guise NON, Boyd Rice has created something that falls on the border of beautiful and just plain scary. Children Of The Black Sun is as bleak as the title suggests. As frightening as most classic horror film soundtracks, NON produces a perfect audio underworld for horrific creatures like vampires, demons and ghouls. A more perfect soundtrack for Nosferatu could not be imagined.

Falling somewhere between David Lynch and Anne Rice, Children Of The Black Sun is a continuous mix of black noise. The failure to break between the seven tracks makes it even more unsettling because the listener never gains a moment of silence. It doesn't help as well, when he mixes in the sound of fires burning (envision hell) and angels singing on "The Fountain Of Fortune", as well as the voice of the creepiest man on earth on "Son Of The Sun".

Children Of The Black Sun is extremely unnerving to listen to in one sitting, but saying that just proves how effective the atmosphere Rice has created is.

It starts in the upper atmosphere, in that rarefied air where silence sings and time is little more than an abstraction. As it makes its way down through the tree line, to sea level, to the ear canals, elliptical windows and auditory nerves of the great unwashed, the shapes begin to shift. The sine waves become more distinct: swarming, swirling guitars, drums like a churning steam press, a chorus of celestial voices. Instruments collude and collide in a roiling shoal and then dissipate, leaving a cavernous hole, a ghost town, the vestiges and echoes of a brief terrestrial existence. Out in Denton and “other parts of the country”, where seemingly mild psychotropic disturbances can have vast and sinister implications for certain elements within the local populaces, Pyramids conjure the cacophonies of the great unknown, one song at a time.

Voice Crack is the duo of Swiss musicians Andy Guhl (percussion and bass) and Norbert Moeslang (reeds) who make music with broken objects found in garbage cans (with a peculiar passion for electronic devices such as radios and calculators). The way these objects are played is often "random", meaning that the two "composers" introduce rules to let chance create the sounds that are then recorded.
Above average experimental instrospection, below perfection and way beyond imagination.
You should check this one for sure.

Sometimes I randomly acquire metal (or what could at least tangentially be considered "metal" albums), without ever having heard anything about the artist beforehand. Of the four or five times I have used this method in the past, disappointment always followed, not because of my unwillingness to absorb new genres or methods of presentation, but because the products in question (all of which are reviewed in this archive) were mediocre at worst or average at best. The one exception to this trend, at least in my experience, has been Aghast's Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis, which is more than likely the most haunting and immersive ambient album to come across these ears.

There is a small group of albums I own that I use to submerse me into the dream world at night, that is to say, regardless of how energetic or tired I am at any given time, and no matter my mood or general disposition, these albums will almost always help me to fall asleep within 15 minutes. While some would say that any album which possesses this tranquillising quality must surely be boring (for it IS sleep-inducing), there is quite a difference between an album which bores one to sleep, and one which inspires wildly incredible dreams and thoughts. Every time I listen to this album at night, I have dreams which can be classified as memorable, at the very least, to report the next morning. Furthermore, the other reason why this album cannot be considered snore-inducing is because when one listens to it (and devotes full attention to it) while fully awake, a state of near-hypnosis is induced - consciousness is retained, but thoughts become somewhat amorphous, and should someone enter the room and startle you, you will feel as though you have been yanked from a different place, as though you have been interrupted from an engagement in a different space, even though you have not actually travelled anywhere.

The music itself is perhaps the pinnacle of minimalism - sure, the term has been used to describe other landmark albums such as Beherit's Drawing Down the Moon or Darkthrone's Transilvanian Hunger, but those albums, by comparison, involve a flurry and multitude of activity which is simply not to be found here. No, Aghast has here chosen to rely on a few synthesizer notes per track, with the occasional vocal passage that exists solely to add to the ambiance, not to distract the listener with lyrics or any word-based message. There are hundreds of albums that are somewhat comparable to Hexerei, as anyone with a creepy basement and a synthesizer can compose their own spooky "masterwork", but what separates this one from the rubbish is the masterful sense of atmosphere which on every track evokes imagery of ancient rituals, of desolation, of fear, and generally of pure evil.

I do believe that every human being (with the exception of those that are chemically imbalanced or otherwise defective) has the capability of discerning right from wrong, in various forms, and from an aural perspective, Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis must truly rank as one of the most engrossing, haunting and evil albums ever recorded. - Metal Archives

Black metal with a 'normal' metal feel to much of it - indeed, at one point in opener "Lascivious Tyranny" there's an Urge Overkill-style riff progression, and closer "Dragged Down the Cobblestones" intros with a muscular Danzig posturing, or even (shudder) a Misfits one. The necessary BM screams are there and the middle two songs are more dangerously dark and fierce (along with parts of the other two). As for lyrical content, well, the seeming misogyny appears less sexual and more symbolically brutal (and who can determine what's being sung in BM if you aren't perusing the lyrics as you listen?). I've never wanted to burn churches or worship the horned one while consuming this brand of music and I'm in no mood to start pulling a Jimmy Page with whip and valise while listening to Genital Tomb so subliminal influence is out the window. The demo quality makes it sound rougher than it actually is; all-in-all it's probably good to have around for aggression dispersal. No, not really bad at all. Plus, it's Prurient for fuck sakes! I know ZandoS Corp. from lastfm and I have to say that I was impressed with this excelent release. The first impression was: "breakcore", more gabber kicks and amen breaks with the monotonous sound of the Praxis style, but that notion changed after the first couple of seconds of the first track, no, Zandos Corp. is also and IDM work by definition, he ranges from glitched beats emulating organic rhythms to industrial breakbeats within the complex drill and bass structure, some nice noise and abstract melodic progressions as well, yes, melodic noise with subtle greatness.
A 100% brazilian solo project by Adriano Machado.

KK. Null (born Kazuyuki Kishino in Tokyo) is an experimental multi-instrumentalist. He began as a guitarist, but soon added composer, singer, electronic, drummer to his list of talents, and also studied Butoh dancing.

Null joined the noise/progressive rock band Ybo2 in 1984, issuing several albums and EPs throughout the remainder of the decade. Later he started to more bands, such as Absolute Null Punkt (aka ANP) and his most well known one, the self-described “progressive hardcore trio” Zeni Geva. From that point he also produced albums for other artists, created his own record label (Nux Organization), and played live and collaboration albums with many other musicians, including John Zorn, Yona-Kit, Steve Albini, Boredoms, Seiichi Yamamoto, Jim O’Rourke, Merzbow, Fred Frith, James Plotkin, Keiji Haino, Otomo Yoshihide, Jon Rose, Atau Tanaka, Zbigniew Karkowski, Z’EV, Alexei Borisov. Noisegate and Philip Samartzis, as well as supporting such artists as Sonic Youth and Mike Patton on tour. Altogether Null has released more than 100 albums. In 2004 he restarted ANP and in 2006 they released their first studio album in 20 years.

This album should not be experienced as a noise project but as a highly experimental work which is said was done without drum machine, keyboard or computers.
Locked loops, drone progressions, sonic intrinsic formations, various string instruments, and that japanese folkloric flavor somehow mixed into those sometimes glitched and bizarre sounds. I hope you get to enjoy K.K. Null for what it is.

Nest is the collaborative project of Otto Totland (Deaf Center / Type Records) and Huw Roberts (Serein). The two started working together after forging a strong friendship as former members of the Miasmah label. This self-titled EP is their first work publicly released, so it is a great honour that we are able to offer it to you here.

Both pianists, there is little wonder that after exploring a plethora of musical styles, the two find themselves most at home writing traditionally structured pieces, with the ivories a major element throughout. The EP demonstrates clearly the innate ability the two have for song writing, borrowing from the world of film soundtracks and contemporary classical composers to craft delicate instrumental compositions.

Alongside their favoured instrument can be variously heard the plucked strings of the Welsh harp, violins, woodwind instruments, field recordings, percussion and a heady dose of mind wobbling effects. From the time Nest began writing together, one purpose was clear; to produce beautiful music free of pretense, and they do it exceptionally well.

So what happens when you take one free jazz pioneer, one band of noise-metal experimentalists and stick them on a stage together? Well Victo have come up with the answer – everyone’s favourite noisy fellers Wolf Eyes and jazz supremo Anthony Braxton teamed up unannounced at the 2005 Victoriaville Festival last year, and since then all I’ve heard has been whispered words and rumours about the set. There was a cassette tape release shortly after, but selling my mother wasn’t an option, so this cd has been a real excitement and a revelation for me and as soon as it landed on my desk I knew I was in for something rather special. Wolf Eyes are a very important band for me, and this album only goes to show how good they are at what they do. It’s noise, yes indeed, it’s metal, probably, it’s aggressive, angry and sometimes evil, of course – but it’s also incredibly measured and put together with the utmost skill and understanding. I often tell people that there’s noise and then there's noise, there’s amateurish noise and then there’s this – pure visceral abandonment on every level. And what exactly does Braxton add to the proceedings? Well his soprano sax wails and screams drench the waves of white noise and rousing percussive squelches perfectly – it sounds like they were always supposed to be there, and that’s an achievement in itself. Hearing ‘Stabbed in the Face’ (a classic cut from the Burned Mind album) performed live with Braxton’s accompaniment makes me truly sorry I couldn’t have been there to witness this earth shaking meeting of minds. So for us unlucky souls who couldn’t attend, all that’s left for to do is lap up this disc, and lie in wait for Wolf Eyes’ hugely anticipated next album ‘Human Animal’ (take it from me… it’s worth it). Dave Murray (Ex- Estradsphere) was one of the driving creative forces of Estradasphere, and after his leaving the band, he decided to create a band after his own liking. Now, this is decidely not Estradasphere, despite it being of a similar formula, combing seemingly unrelated genres effectively into an odd tapestry of musical genres. However, The Deserts of Traun is a different entity altogether, with a completely different feel.

Instead of granoise compositions and longer tracks, TDoT uses much smaller and concise tracks, even drawing some comparisons to Fantomas, instead of Estradasphere. The songs feel, as they should, and are named as, like the sound track to an adventure movie, full of suspense and exotic locations, which the music pulls off wonderfully. The music has just about everything, from creepy ambient death metal, to ethnic folk music, to classical, to jazz and so on and so forth.

A very fun and interesting album, but one that should be listened to along with the visual aid.

"Supergroups rarely work out, but this head-to-head sees the minimal sound artists losing their respective attention to detail and heading out into a messy world of robot funk. Recorded in 2001-2006 in Berlin, Tokyo and Chemitz (the East German birthplace of Raster Noton) we see the three musicians taking hold of their considerable combined talents, and far removed from the icy minimalism you would have expected to hear from the three in the past, this is as pounding and ear destroying as Pan Sonic in their prime. Rough sampled textures are chopped and layered rhythmically beneath pounding kick drums and cyclic high pitched synthesizer tones, leaving Bretschneider's token bass frequencies room to make up the heavy bottom end. Somewhere in between the warehouse pounding of Chain Reaction-era Monolake and the tempered minimal headphone listening we all came to expect from Alva Noto, Signal is a brutal listening experience, best heard loud to the point of discomfort. In fact I can imagine this music played on gigantic stacks of speakers, the frequencies booming out across thousands of eager heads - it's just so immense. Those of you enamoured with the work of any of the artists involved, or with classic Sahko or Hardwax emissions really need to check this without delay. Immense and totally intense music."

Prepare to be sucked into a hypnotic trance, like water with little bit of glitter swirling around you. There’s something fuzzy, almost distorted lurking in the shadows here, and while I’d like to call it bass, I think it’s more enjoyable to let the instrument have it’s own mystery. The drums stomp away in a simple, and heartbeat like manner, with floaty bits of white noise thrown on top. Some would call this doom, although it’s a form that goes pretty far off the map I’m familiar with. If you’ve got a good understanding of Hydra Head Records, Jesu and Sunn O))), you’ll begin to get an idea of where you might be getting into here.

Belly may be a weird and noisy hip-hop album, but it's still a hip-hop album, and by that measure it's more 3 Feet High and Rising than Death Certificate. Food for Animals bring the noise, but they don't want to bludgeon you with it. On Belly, they drop some incomprehensible beats, make sounds that recall a box of light bulbs rolling down a flight of stairs, and put down some pretty heavy lyrics-- the name is after all a reference to the belly of the beast, to being pulverized and digested-- but it's not a some head-grinding avant-deathtrip. "I get nice and fuzzy with my buddies cause they funny and I love y'all/ We chuckling and coughing and laugh for no reason while we talkin'," raps Vulture on "Swampy (Summer Jam)", a song that's as much about healing as it is about murky underpants. "One of the predicted swings in the weather due to global warming is paradoxically a new ice age which could envelope Europe. Time Frost is music based upon this concept and uses tiny fragments of music from an iconic European composition, Johann Strauss's Blue Danube. I imagined that tiny pieces of former cultures survived locked in the ice and waiting for future archaeologists to discover and interpret them.I used vinyl lock grooves of the Blue Danube (from the 1968 MGM recording for the film soundtrack 2001 ) These formed the starting points for the five compositions in Time Frost which were then manipulated and added to and re-arranged into new compositions. Time Frost is an imaginary recording of the mutational process of sound locked into ice and transformed over millenia. Like ghosts of music trapped in an evershifting permafrost.

Ok, what do I have to say about Xanopticon, marvelous breakcore, an odd mixture of fast nano-beated ambient and microscopic shared glass of clicks and cuts, waved break beats of an aparent calming ambient music built out of caotic rhytm structures, pretty complex and fast.

Litany derives its text from the 24 prayers of St. John Chrysostum (the man responsible for writing the liturgy upon which Russian Orthodoxy is based) and there’s an appropriately devotional tone to the piece regardless of its manifold dynamic twists and turns. Apparently, Part had been familiar with the prayers for over twenty years, always intending to find his own musical resolution to them. The shortest of the three pieces, ‘Psalom’, is up next, an altogether gentler affair, retaining a light-as-air, floating quality over the course of its seven-minutes. "Finland's senior composer was a student and heir apparent to the great Jean Sibelius, to whom he is inevitably compared whenever he spins out one of his trademark long, Romantic melodies. In the '60s, Rautavaara began experimenting with tape and electronic sounds, and in 1972 he created the remarkable Cantus Arcticus, a concerto where the soloist wasn't human, and wasn't even live. Using tapes of arctic birds that he recorded in northern Finland, he wrote a three-movement concerto where the orchestral music seems to grow organically out of the birdsongs. Winds are asked to retune a bit to accommodate the birds' tuning; melodies take flight majestically and reappear later in slightly altered form, as if returning from a long journey. Rautavaara, by the way, has gone on to further success with a series of "Angel" pieces, like the monumental Symphony #7, called "Angel of Light," and concertos for more conventional soloists." - Emusic

Clouddead has a hard-to-classify sound; if you described it as "lo-fi ambient spoken word meets surreal hip-hop with an indie rock bent," you'd be leaving a lot out. The CD compiles previously released 10-inches created by producer Odd Nosdam and MCs Dose One and Why? and members of the Anticon, the West Coast hip-hop collective. The MCs rap, recite, and sing words that make Beck's lyrics sound tame and fussy by comparison. Their declamation can be goofy, swaggering, funny, swinging, nasal--you name it. This extremely open-ended and varied use of language recalls the work of the sonically inclined poet Edwin Torres. Sometimes the language on this disc can be almost inaudible; then it's just another element in Nosdam's lovely and murky music. Albums this odd often confuse people. Also, like this one, they can be extremely compelling.

This album was originaly released as a vinyl for Raster-Noton, so that should say a lot already.
Then remastered to digital format by Austria's Mego label.
CoH also known as Ivan Pavlov is a russian electronic musician that lives and works in Sweden. However, his cultural roots are in his mother country, and he seems to be more a rapport to the Russian avant-garde rather than to the Western rock-pop tradition.
As one of his early works (mask of birth), this one is actually inspired by the 70's and early 80's dance music, but don't get fooled, as this album actually works on that microscopic, Raster-Notonish level.
As stated on the cover, it is "new disco for the new human".

"Undertaking a project to transfer from tape to digital some old tape recordings of Icelandic vocal lament songs presumed to have been recording in the 1960's Akira claims to have been completely obsessed by them to an extent where he wished to incorporate the vocals into his own music. '1382 Wyclif Gen. ii. 7' - the single voice swept up into an echoic overlapping framework, subtely falling apart until a strong wind blows across a group of microphones - astonishing. '1390 Glower Conf. II.20' is a more melancholic song, one which would lie perfectly within context in one of Ingmar Bergman's stark films like 'Winter Light' and 'Shame'. '1440 Promp Parv. 518/20' finds Akira hightening the ghostly quality of this vocal through reverb, echo and subdued time stretch that would make a Chris Morris disturbathon sketch even more effective. '1483 Caxton Golden Leg, 208b/2' stretches out for over twenty minutes feeling like a floating fogbound rework of Gyorgy Ligeti's 'Lux Aeterna'. To round up 'Spellewauerynsherde' brings to myself memories of loved one's passed, favourite films that haunt your consciousness for weeks after viewing and make you want to revisit your favourite spiritually enhancing CD's. Not many album's will move you in quite the way that this album does. Believe."

"Takagi Masakatsu splits his time between video art, installations and music, and over his last 3 cds has perfected a brand of impressionistic, fragile electronica that sits well with the lush, sometimes abstract imagery of his visual work.

Eating compiles pieces recorded between 1996 and 2002, and inhabits the same headspace mapped out by Susumo Yokota or Nobukazu Takemura's Childs View project. Over 13 short tracks, Masakatsu constructs delicate minimalist soundscapes populated with clicking digital marimbas, soft, spectral shimmers and gentle arpeggiated chords from crystalline electric piano sounds. Streaks of faltering accordion or (as on the sunkissed Burt Bacharach stylings of 'Fausel") semi-cheesy organ lines wander through; occasionally cloudy, distant beats emerge ("Mihyn").

Some pieces offer a bit more grit; "Angje" builds nagging synthetic rhythms that eventually flower into a muted breakbeat matrix, while the odd "Woei" flirts with a studied discordance. Elsewhere though, Masakatsu offers seductive ambience that at its least successful borders on twee (as in the dayglo plastic textures of "trot").

Where he scores is in his sensitive deployment of texture and simple yet effective deployment of musical material. Chords hang unresolved, or faltering rhythms underpin fragmented yet graceful melodies. For the most part, Masakatsu avoids the glitch, preferring to create subtle discontinuities through big intervallic leaps and occasional rhythmic eccentricites.

Though sounding dissimilar, Masakatsu's work echoes that of Brian Eno's semi-ambient works in that both harbour a slight, intangible sense of threat beneath their still,unbroken surfaces. Worth a listen." - BBC

Masterminded by human dynamo Tatsuya Yoshida, drummer and vocalist extrordinaire of Ruins and at least ten other groups at any given moment, this is the logical culmination of years spent elaborating on various aspects of zeuhl music, a remarkable French music tradition developed in the wake of the legendary Magma employing equal parts Orff-ian choral bombast, fusion jazz dexterity and the overcharged emotionalism of gospel. It incorporates wildly elaborate vocal patterns and chants in their own invented language (an homage to Magma's Kobaian dialect) churn, intertwine and somersault in and around almost every note here. As this progresses, and the energy levels soar higher and higher, this passes from the brilliant into the realm of the truly sublime. Outstanding album, one of my top 20 favorite albums of all time most definitely.

This is an impressive album to chill with in a rainy afternoon. It's an absorbing listen, with a lot of deep sentiment and power. Download the album if you want a good sunday afternoon album to drink coffee or tea and listen to the rain crashing in the concrete.

Noise in a very smart and pretencious way. John Wiese is a noise artist residing in California, he has been collaborating with a lot of people since the creation of his own record label, Helicopter.

He's part of Sissy Spacek (which I'll upload later) and LHD, he has released lots of solo work, and he has been praised as one of the best noise artists from the USA.

One of the best qualities from John as a noise artist, is that he's not so common even in the noise genre, even when the title: "soft punk" gives the whole idea and feeling of the album, you can spect the best, a warm intelligent noise that's also punk in a way.

Intelligent noise? Yes, you can see him recording on MAX/MSP with Aaron Dilloway from Wolf Eyes and you can see him working with drone band Sunn O))), that's pretty smart for me.
His sound, very algorithm based noise, it's not as harsh and layered as many others, but you get that feeling that he spends a lot of time building brilliant sequenced noise riffs, or something, I don't know. He's really good, one of my all time favourites.

One of the best noise albums I have ever heard, I hope you get to enjoy it as much as I did.

Tony Conrad, amazing.

A very talented man, video and sound artist, classic avant-garde (60's, as avant-garde it's just temporal).
You can relate him to a lot of good old-school musicians that went evolving from orthodox compositions through vanguardism to the masterpieces they made, you can find Charlemagne Palestine, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Luc Ferrari, Morton Feldman and many more.

Let's Trade Pants is a very rare CD from 2003, which was reissued on vinyl later.
I don't have too much info about this album, but all I have to say about it is that it's a delicious drone piece with amplified string instruments, like a violin or cello. Pretty harsh in a certain way and acid, but delicious drone progression though. There's a small reference to Andrew Deutsch as the responsable for the "audience members reconstruction". He's also a video artist and sound artist from NY that teaches at Alfred University.

I decided to publish this album since Hiroshi Hashimoto has been a great influence in my musical taste, a japanese vanguardist that owns a record label (SSSM noise) and that composes beautiful music that ranges from really dark ambiented noise through classical instrumentalized progressions to some kind of rhytmical beat oriented warm noise.

His flexibility to manipulate his style from dark ambientalized noise to odd semi-glitched samples makes me realize that Japan is a weird place with a lot of musical geniuses, and a great place to live as well :D

Even when many agree that his early tapes are his best works(he comes from the old japanoise scene, created by Masami Akita a.k.a. Merzbow) I should say this album is really great, even when is dated 2005(he started composing in 1987), I would place it in the K.K. Null spectrum, as not pure harsh noise but a mix of many musical stances, a delicious eclectic combination. Pretty Avant-garde in the powernoise scene.

Welcome to music is not a language, a blog created for music.

"Music is not a language" comes from Iannis Xenakis explanation of how music is actually not a language but an intricate and interpretative way to give music a sense of non gramatical comunication, not oral nor gestural. Music's more than a procedure of expressión, more complex.

Quoting Xenakis: "Music is not a language. Any musical piece is akin to a boulder with complex forms, with striations and engraved designs atop and within, which men can decipher in a thousand different ways without ever finding the right answer or the best one."

Anyway, this blog was created with the intention of reviewing that beautiful music that we love and want to shear with everyone else (the ones that are able to admire it and love it).

The musical spectrum here shouldn't be restricted by anything or anyone, we should be posting things that we like (txusmx and me) and want to share our opinion on those particular works.

Although, the idea of creating this was initially influenced by the idea (redundancy error) of mixing our musical knowledge, so you should find here a lot of drone, ambient, dark ambient, glitch, IDM, rock noise, harsh noise, black metal, death metal, progressive, math rock, krautrock, grindcore, breakcore, breakbeat, drill-n-bass, industrial, power electronics, doom, folk, downtempo, leftfield, trip-hop, jazz, free jazz, nu-jazz, Classical, neo-classical, shoegaze, experimental, punk, psychedelic, ultra-minimal, speedcore, corenforce, darkwave (generalized), and many many more, as long as it has a good quality and that avant-garde feeling ;D
